Five for Friday- Jan 8

Happy Friday friends! We made it through the first week back.  Actually, my kids did a great job- maybe they were still tired?? ;-) Much to my dog's shagrin (because I'm refusing to play with her after walking and playing outside for over an hour) I'm writing a Five for Friday post! Finally!!!  I'm hoping to commit to it for the rest of the school year because it's so fun.  So, I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday!
I was honored this week to be in the top 3 nominees by my fellow staff members for the Washington Post's Agnes Meyer Teacher of the Year Award!  It felt good knowing my coworkers think so highly of me.  One of our wonderful 2nd grade teachers, Mrs. Hwang, won the final nomination.  She's fantastic!
Unfortunately we had a planning day the day the picture was taken and I didn't know this was happening... So that's me in the jeans and tshirt...

I jumped into Guided Reading this week.  I was doing it on and off in a very loose manner but now it's full steam ahead!  We started with a book from my Winter Reader Pack that has dots for pointing to just to ease back into things. All of my groups did so great!!!

If you saw my Peek at my Week post you know that I started Word Family Study this week! I LOVE this! To introduce the new family each week the kids put on letter bibs and we sound out the words.

Did you hear about the Hour of Code back in December? The goal was to get students around the world on computers coding all at the same time.  Well, we finally got to do it with our Technology Integration Specialist and it was amazing!!!!  We worked on the Angry Bird Mazes, which kept the kids interested.  One of my boys made it through ALL 16 levels!

I found out this week that I will be presenting at the Virginia Council for Teachers of Math conference in March!  It's a statewide math conference and I will be presenting on differentiating during whole group math lessons and math centers.  I am very excited but also nervous!  I've never done anything like this...  Any tips?!?!

Thanks for stopping by.  Happy weekend!

  1. Lovely to meet you via your comment on my blog post :) Well done on your nomination and I too always seemed to be the teacher wearing the "wrong" stuff when ever there was a photo to be taken! Tips on presenting at conference would be: make sure you speak loudly and clearly and take questions afterwards as well as hang around for those teachers who'd like to ask something but are too shy in front of an audience. Have a wonderful weekend :) Special Teaching at Pempi’s Palace
